Most of this just affects commentary and documentations. The only significant behavior change is translating author names via proper_name_lite rather than proper_name_utf8, or not translating them at all. proper_name_lite is good enough for coreutils and avoids the bloat that had coreutils not using Gnulib proper_name. * bootstrap.conf (gnulib_modules): Use propername-lite instead of propername. (XGETTEXT_OPTIONS): Look for proper_name_lite instead of for proper_name_utf8. * cfg.mk (local-checks-to-skip): Remove sc_proper_name_utf8_requires_ICONV, since we no longer use proper_name_utf8. (old_NEWS_hash): Update. (sc_check-I18N-AUTHORS): Remove; no longer needed.

Many tests use `program ... && fail=1` to ensure expected error situations are indicated. However that would mask an unexpected exit (like a crash). Therefore explicitly check the expected exit code. Note where error messages are also verified, the extra protection is not added. * tests/init.sh (returns_): A new helper function to check the return code of a command, and used throughout the tests. * cfg.mk (sc_prohibit_and_fail_1): Add a syntax check to avoid new instances of this issue.

Exempt init.sh because it runs before we're assured to have a shell that groks $(...). Exempt *.mk because "$" would have to be doubled, and besides, any `...` expression in a .mk file is almost certainly evaluated before init.sh is run. Finally, also exempt the perl-based tests, because perl's `...` cannot be converted to $(...). One side-effect of this change is that "make check" now works even if you put "." early in your shell's search PATH (don't do that!). Remove all test-related Makefile.am files, except those generated by mk-script. Instead, tests/Makefile.am now lists not only the tests directly under tests/, but also those in tests/*/ that are not generated by mk-script, e.g., cp/abuse, cp/acl, mv/i-1, etc. A lot of these changes are like this: -. $srcdir/../lang-default +. $top_srcdir/tests/lang-default -. $srcdir/../test-lib.sh +. $top_srcdir/tests/test-lib.sh * configure.ac (AC_CONFIG_FILES): Remove corresponding Makefiles. * tests/check.mk (vc_exe_in_TESTS): Relax syntax requirements. * tests/rwx-to-mode: Remove file.
