Update to latest gnulib with new copyright year. Run "make update-copyright" and then... * gnulib: Update included in this commit as copyright years are the only change from the previous gnulib commit. * tests/init.sh: Sync with gnulib to pick up copyright year. * bootstrap: Manually update copyright year, until we fully sync with gnulib at a later stage. * tests/sample-test: Adjust to use the single most recent year.
2023-05-07build: update gnulib submodule to latestBernhard Voelker1-3/+4
This fixes failures in "very-expensive" tests on FTS with many directory entries: FAIL: tests/rm/ext3-perf FAIL: tests/rm/many-dir-entries-vs-OOM The following shows the problem in the former of the above tests: $ mkdir d && seq 400000 | env -C d xargs touch ) $ rm -rf d rm: traversal failed: d: Operation not supported Gnulib commit 3f0950f65abb (2023-04-26) introduced this regression which was fixed again with gnulib commit d4d8abb39eb0. See discussion in <https://lists.gnu.org/r/bug-gnulib/2023-05/msg00040.html> * bootstrap.conf (gnulib_modules): Change "year2038-required" to "year2038-recommended"; the module has been replaced. * gnulib: Update to latest. * tests/init.sh: Likewise.

2015-01-31doc,maint: fix use of "i.e." in documentation and commentsBernhard Voelker1-1/+1
To align with all other places (and correct grammar), change all upper-case "I.E." to "I.e.". Furthermore, ensure that "i.e." is followed by a comma. Finally, ensure to use a double-space before "I.e.," at the beginning of a sentence. The following was used to change all offending uses (apart from old ChangeLog files): $ git grep -liF 'i.e.' \ | xargs sed -i \ -e 's/I\.E\./I.e./g' \ -e 's/\. \(I\.e\.\)/. \1/g' \ -e 's/\([Ii]\.e\.\)\( \)/\1,\2/g' \ -e 's/\([Ii]\.e\.\)$/\1,/g' * cfg.mk (sc_prohibit_uppercase_id_est): Add new rule. (sc_ensure_double_space_after_dot_before_id_est): Likewise. (sc_ensure_comma_after_id_est): Likewise. (old_NEWS_hash): Refresh hash via "make update-NEWS-hash". * NEWS: Change use of "id est" abbreviation via the above command. * README: Likewise. * README-prereq: Likewise. * doc/coreutils.texi: Likewise. * gl/lib/rand-isaac.c: Likewise. * gl/lib/tempname.c.diff: Likewise. * man/stdbuf.x: Likewise. * src/cat.c: Likewise. * src/copy.c: Likewise. * src/copy.h: Likewise. * src/cp.c: Likewise. * src/cut.c: Likewise. * src/dd.c: Likewise. * src/df.c: Likewise. * src/fiemap.h: Likewise. * src/longlong.h: Likewise. * src/ls.c: Likewise. * src/numfmt.c: Likewise. * src/pr.c: Likewise. * src/shred.c: Likewise. * src/shuf.c: Likewise. * src/split.c: Likewise. * tests/Coreutils.pm: Likewise. * tests/df/df-symlink.sh: Likewise. * tests/df/skip-rootfs.sh: Likewise. * tests/init.sh: Likewise. * tests/ls/color-norm.sh: Likewise. * tests/misc/basename.pl: Likewise. * tests/misc/ls-misc.pl: Likewise. * tests/misc/md5sum-bsd.sh: Likewise. * tests/misc/shred-exact.sh: Likewise. * tests/misc/sort.pl: Likewise. * tests/misc/stdbuf.sh: Likewise. * tests/misc/tac-continue.sh: Likewise. * tests/rm/r-root.sh: Likewise. * tests/tail-2/symlink.sh: Likewise.
2015-01-14tests: add extra protection against unexpected exitsPádraig Brady1-0/+13
Many tests use `program ... && fail=1` to ensure expected error situations are indicated. However that would mask an unexpected exit (like a crash). Therefore explicitly check the expected exit code. Note where error messages are also verified, the extra protection is not added. * tests/init.sh (returns_): A new helper function to check the return code of a command, and used throughout the tests. * cfg.mk (sc_prohibit_and_fail_1): Add a syntax check to avoid new instances of this issue.
2015-01-01maint: update further copyright year number rangesBernhard Voelker1-1/+1
* bootstrap: Update copyright year manually (missing in previous gnulib update). * tests/init.sh: Likewise. The entries in the exemption list are processed by "grep -vEf ./.x-update-copyright", and therefore evaluated as an extended regular expression (ERE). Thus, the "bootstrap" entry also matched for bootstrap.conf which we want to be updated. * .x-update-copyright: Change all entries to EREs, i.e. including the caret ^ and dollar sign $ meta-characters matching the beginning and the end of a line. * bootstrap.conf: Update copyright year by "make update-copyright". Finally, the only one showing up with the following command should be the COPYING file: $ git grep 'Copyright .* Free Software' | grep -v '2015 Free Software'
2014-06-11build: update gnulib submodule and tests/init.sh to latestPádraig Brady1-0/+2

2013-07-22maint: make some shell and perl scripts executable in 'tests/'Bernhard Voelker1-0/+0
Some newer test scripts - partially ones from me - are not executable. It does not seem to be a problem, but for consistency and to avoid future problems on unusual platforms or shells change the permissions by adding the executable bit. * cfg.mk (sc_tests_executable): Add new syntax-check rule to ensure that all test scripts are executable. * tests/df/df-output.sh: Change file mode from 644 to 755. * tests/du/threshold.sh: Likewise. * tests/factor/run.sh: Likewise. * tests/init.sh: Likewise. * tests/misc/csplit-suppress-matched.pl: Likewise. * tests/misc/numfmt.pl: Likewise. * tests/tail-2/retry.sh: Likewise.
2013-01-01maint: update all copyright year number rangesJim Meyering1-1/+1
Run "make update-copyright", but then also run this, perl -pi -e 's/2\d\d\d-//' tests/sample-test to make that one script use the single most recent year number.
2012-07-04date: fails to diagnose invalid inputJim Meyering1-3/+2
date -d "$(printf '\xb0')" would print 00:00:00 with today's date rather than diagnosing the invalid input. Now it reports this: date: invalid date '\260' * gnulib: Update submodule to latest for fixed parse-datetime.y. * tests/misc/date [invalid-high-bit-set]: New test. * NEWS (Bug fixes): Mention it. * bootstrap, tests/init.sh: Also update to latest. Reported by Peter Evans in http://bugs.gnu.org/11843
2012-05-08build: update gnulib submodule to latest; also bootstrap and init.shJim Meyering1-10/+27
* bootstrap: Update from gnulib. * tests/init.sh: Likewise.
2012-01-09tests: change `...' to '...' on lines not matching /[=\$]/Jim Meyering1-2/+2
Exempt lines with '$' or '=', since those are prone to improper conversion. Run this: git grep -l "\`[^']*'" tests \ |xargs perl -pi -e '/[=\$]/ and next;s/\`([^'\''"]*?'\'')/'\''$1/g'
2012-01-01maint: update all copyright year number rangesJim Meyering1-1/+1
Run "make update-copyright".
2011-11-23build: update gnulib and tests/init.shJim Meyering1-6/+86
* gnulib: Update. * tests/init.sh: Update from gnulib.
2011-09-19tests: init.sh: support any non-GNU diffBruno Haible1-0/+2
* tests/init.sh (compare): If "diff -c" is supported but "diff -u" is not, use "diff -c". Useful on AIX 6.1, HP-UX 11.31, OSF/1 5.1, Solaris 8.
2011-09-02tests: init.sh: work also with any non-GNU diff that supports -uBruno Haible1-1/+1
* tests/init.sh: Relax check for diff -u support. Rather than checking for GNU diff via --version, simply check for support for -u itself. Useful at least on OpenBSD 4.9.
2011-06-20tests: init.sh: use "sed 1q" in place of "head -1"Jim Meyering1-1/+1
* tests/init.sh (warn_): Use "sed 1q" in place of "head -1". The latter is officially obsolete but more portable than "head -n1". Reported by Bernhard Voelker.
2011-06-20tests: improve init.sh by removing w2_Bernhard Voelker1-7/+6
* tests/init.sh (w2_): Remove, moving contents into... (warn_): ...here. Call self from subshell when IFS must be changed.
2011-06-17tests: remove skip_test_ function; use new skip_ insteadJim Meyering1-2/+2
* tests/init.cfg (skip_test_): Remove function. Use skip_ in place of skip_test_ everywhere else. * cfg.mk (sc_prohibit_skip_): Remove rule. * tests/**: Use skip_, not skip_test_, everywhere.
2011-06-17tests: make init.sh's warn_ emit to both the tty and the log fileJim Meyering1-2/+6
* tests/init.sh (warn_): When $stderr_fileno_ != 2, emit the diagnostic to both the tty and the log file.
2011-06-17tests: use printf, not echo in init.sh's warn_ functionJim Meyering1-1/+11
* tests/init.sh (warn_): Use printf, not echo. The latter would misbehave when given strings containing a backslash or starting with e.g., -n. James Youngman suggested setting IFS.
2011-06-14tests: accommodate HP-UX and ksh-derived shellsJim Meyering1-2/+2
Running "make check" normally prints a diagnostic to the outermost stderr (usually a tty) to explain why a test is skipped. It did this by redirecting FD 9 to stderr (via "exec 9>&2") before invoking the shell script. Shell scripts write skip-explanation to FD 9 via init.sh's skip_ function. However, with ksh and HP-UX's /bin/sh, the effects of "exec 9>&2" are canceled upon fork-and-exec, so we would get a "Bad file number" diagnostic and no skip explanation on those systems. * tests/check.mk (TESTS_ENVIRONMENT): Redirect more portably, via "$(SHELL) 9>&2", rather than the prior "exec 9>&2; $(SHELL) ..." Actually, we use "shell_or_perl_ 9>&2", to make this effective also for the perl-based tests. * tests/init.sh (stderr_fileno_): Update the advice in comments. See http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.comp.gnu.coreutils.bugs/22488 for lots of discussion. Stefano Lattarini suggested the solution of putting "9>&2" after the command. Reported by Bruno Haible.
2011-06-13init.sh: sync from gnulibJim Meyering1-2/+6
* tests/init.sh: Sync recent changes from gnulib.
2011-06-13maint: revert previous commitJim Meyering1-1/+1
Revert "init.sh: accommodate shells for which 1>&$stderr_fileno_ fails" This reverts commit 6fb9aeedd1b858a61d5cbf7f15782adf29ff733a. That change did not solve the problem. For details, see http://debbugs.gnu.org/cgi/bugreport.cgi?bug=8846#74
2011-06-13init.sh: accommodate shells for which 1>&$stderr_fileno_ failsJim Meyering1-1/+1
* tests/init.sh (warn_): Use eval to work around a bug in some shells, like those of Solaris 10 and HP-UX 11.11. Improved by Stefano Lattarini.
2011-05-13tests: use skip_test_, not skip_Jim Meyering1-2/+2
skip_test_ emits its diagnostic both to FD 9 (tty), and to FD 2 (usually the log file), whereas init.sh's skip_ emits only to FD 9. Without that, the log is slightly less useful. * tests/cp/fiemap-2: Use skip_test_, not skip_. * tests/cp/fiemap-perf: Likewise. * tests/du/bigtime: Likewise. * tests/du/files0-from-dir: Likewise. * tests/du/move-dir-while-traversing: Likewise. * tests/init.sh: Likewise. * tests/misc/sort-stale-thread-mem: Likewise. * tests/misc/stat-nanoseconds: Likewise. * tests/mv/i-3: Likewise. * tests/mv/sticky-to-xpart: Likewise. * tests/split/filter: Likewise. Prompted by a report from Pádraig Brady.
2011-03-13touch: update to latest gnulib to fix Solaris 10 touch segfaultJim Meyering1-17/+17
* gnulib: Update to latest, to address http://debbugs.gnu.org/8230. When built on Solaris 9 and run on Solaris 10, touch would segfault. Reported by Ben Walton. * bootstrap: Update from gnulib. * tests/init.sh: Likewise. * NEWS (Bug fixes): Mention this.
2011-01-01maint: update all copyright year number rangesJim Meyering1-1/+1
Run "make update-copyright".
2010-12-31maint: update to latest gnulib, for testsuite improvementEric Blake1-1/+4
* gnulib: Update to latest for init.sh fix. * bootstrap: Resync from gnulib. * tests/init.sh: Likewise.
2010-12-28coreutils: keep lines within 80-column limitsPaul Eggert1-2/+3
