2025-09-16color: use git_colorbool enum type to store colorboolsJeff King1-1/+1
We traditionally used "int" to store and pass around the values defined by "enum git_colorbool" (which were originally just #define macros). Using an int doesn't produce incorrect results, but using the actual enum makes the intent of the code more clear. It would be nice if the compiler could catch cases where we used the enum and an int interchangeably, since it's very easy to accidentally check the boolean true/false of a colorbool like: if (branch_use_color) This is wrong because GIT_COLOR_UNKNOWN and GIT_COLOR_AUTO evaluate to true in C, even though we may ultimately decide not to use color. But C is pretty happy to convert between ints and enums (even with various -Wenum-* warnings). So this sadly doesn't protect us from such mistakes, but it hopefully does make the code easier to read. 2025-09-16color: use GIT_COLOR_* instead of numeric constantsJeff King1-1/+1
Long ago Git's decision to show color for a subsytem was stored in a tri-state variable: it could be true (1), false (0), or unknown (-1). But since daa0c3d971 (color: delay auto-color decision until point of use, 2011-08-17) we want to carry around a new state, "auto", which bases the decision on the tty-ness of stdout (rather than collapsing that "auto" state to a true/false immediately). That commit introduced a set of GIT_COLOR_* defines to represent each state: UNKNOWN, ALWAYS, NEVER, and AUTO. But it only used the AUTO value, and left alone code using bare 0/1/-1 values. And of course since then we've grown many new spots that use those bare values. Let's switch all of these to use the named constants. That should make the code a bit easier to read, as it is more obvious that we're representing a color decision. 2025-03-10hash: stop depending on `the_repository` in `null_oid()`Patrick Steinhardt1-1/+1
The `null_oid()` function returns the object ID that only consists of zeroes. Naturally, this ID also depends on the hash algorithm used, as the number of zeroes is different between SHA1 and SHA256. Consequently, the function returns the hash-algorithm-specific null object ID. This is currently done by depending on `the_hash_algo`, which implicitly makes us depend on `the_repository`. Refactor the function to instead pass in the hash algorithm for which we want to retrieve the null object ID. Adapt callsites accordingly by passing in `the_repository`, thus bubbling up the dependency on that global variable by one layer. There are a couple of trivial exceptions for subsystems that already got rid of `the_repository`. These subsystems instead use the repository that is available via the calling context: - "builtin/grep.c" - "grep.c" - "refs/debug.c" There are also two non-trivial exceptions: - "diff-no-index.c": Here we know that we may not have a repository initialized at all, so we cannot rely on `the_repository`. Instead, we adapt `diff_no_index()` to get a `struct git_hash_algo` as parameter. The only caller is located in "builtin/diff.c", where we know to call `repo_set_hash_algo()` in case we're running outside of a Git repository. Consequently, it is fine to continue passing `the_repository->hash_algo` even in this case. - "builtin/ls-files.c": There is an in-flight patch series that drops `USE_THE_REPOSITORY_VARIABLE` in this file, which causes a semantic conflict because we use `null_oid()` in `show_submodule()`. The value is passed to `repo_submodule_init()`, which may use the object ID to resolve a tree-ish in the superproject from which we want to read the submodule config. As such, the object ID should refer to an object in the superproject, and consequently we need to use its hash algorithm. This means that we could in theory just not bother about this edge case at all and just use `the_repository` in "diff-no-index.c". But doing so would feel misdesigned. 2024-06-14global: introduce `USE_THE_REPOSITORY_VARIABLE` macroPatrick Steinhardt1-0/+2
Use of the `the_repository` variable is deprecated nowadays, and we slowly but steadily convert the codebase to not use it anymore. Instead, callers should be passing down the repository to work on via parameters. It is hard though to prove that a given code unit does not use this variable anymore. The most trivial case, merely demonstrating that there is no direct use of `the_repository`, is already a bit of a pain during code reviews as the reviewer needs to manually verify claims made by the patch author. The bigger problem though is that we have many interfaces that implicitly rely on `the_repository`. Introduce a new `USE_THE_REPOSITORY_VARIABLE` macro that allows code units to opt into usage of `the_repository`. The intent of this macro is to demonstrate that a certain code unit does not use this variable anymore, and to keep it from new dependencies on it in future changes, be it explicit or implicit For now, the macro only guards `the_repository` itself as well as `the_hash_algo`. There are many more known interfaces where we have an implicit dependency on `the_repository`, but those are not guarded at the current point in time. Over time though, we should start to add guards as required (or even better, just remove them). Define the macro as required in our code units. As expected, most of our code still relies on the global variable. Nearly all of our builtins rely on the variable as there is no way yet to pass `the_repository` to their entry point. For now, declare the macro in "biultin.h" to keep the required changes at least a little bit more contained. The `OPT__ABBREV()` option allows the user to specify the length that object hashes shall be abbreviated to. This length needs to be in the range of `(MIN_ABBREV, the_hash_algo->hexsz)`, which is why we clamp the value as required. While this makes sense in the case of `MIN_ABBREV`, it is unnecessary for the upper boundary as the value is eventually passed down to `repo_find_unnique_abbrev_r()`, which handles values larger than the current hash length just fine. In the preceding commit, we have changed parsing of the "core.abbrev" config to stop clamping to the upper boundary. Let's do the same here so that the code becomes simpler, we are consistent with how we treat the "core.abbrev" config and so that we stop depending on `the_repository`. The `OPT__ABBREV()` option can be used to add an option that abbreviates object IDs. When given a length longer than `the_hash_algo->hexsz`, then it will instead set the length to that maximum length. It may not always be guaranteed that we have `the_hash_algo` initialized properly as the hash algorithm can only be set up after we have set up `the_repository`. In that case, the hash would always be truncated to the hex length of SHA1, which may not be what the user desires. In practice it's not a problem as all commands that use `OPT__ABBREV()` also have `RUN_SETUP` set and thus cannot work without a repository. Consequently, both `the_repository` and `the_hash_algo` would be properly set up. Regardless of that, harden the code to not truncate the length when we didn't set up a repository. Unsurprisingly, the noop options callback doesn't bother to look at any of its parameters. Let's mark them so that -Wunused-parameter does not complain. Another option would be to drop the callback and have parse-options itself recognize OPT_NOOP_NOARG. But that seems like extra work for no real benefit. 2023-04-10sequencer: use struct strvec to store merge strategy optionsPhillip Wood1-0/+16
The sequencer stores the merge strategy options in an array of strings which allocated with ALLOC_GROW(). Using "struct strvec" avoids manually managing the memory of that array and simplifies the code. Aside from memory allocation the changes to the sequencer are largely mechanical, changing xopts_nr to xopts.nr and xopts[i] to xopts.v[i]. A new option parsing macro OPT_STRVEC() is also added to collect the strategy options. Hopefully this can be used to simplify the code in builtin/merge.c in the future. Note that there is a change of behavior to "git cherry-pick" and "git revert" as passing “--no-strategy-option” will now clear any previous strategy options whereas before this change it did nothing. This low-level callback was introduced in ce564eb1bd5 (parse-options: add parse_opt_unknown_cb(), 2016-09-05) so that we could advertise --indent-heuristic in git-blame's "-h" output, even though the option is actually handled in parse_revision_opt(). We later stopped doing so in 44ae131e384 (builtin/blame.c: remove '--indent-heuristic' from usage string, 2019-10-28). This is a weird thing to do, and in the intervening years, we've never used it again. Let's drop the helper in the name of simplicity. Dozens of files made use of gettext functions, without explicitly including gettext.h. This made it more difficult to find which files could remove a dependence on cache.h. Make C files explicitly include gettext.h if they are using it. However, while compat/fsmonitor/fsm-ipc-darwin.c should also gain an include of gettext.h, it was left out to avoid conflicting with an in-flight topic. 2021-12-20branch: add flags and config to inherit trackingJosh Steadmon1-0/+16
It can be helpful when creating a new branch to use the existing tracking configuration from the branch point. However, there is currently not a method to automatically do so. Teach git-{branch,checkout,switch} an "inherit" argument to the "--track" option. When this is set, creating a new branch will cause the tracking configuration to default to the configuration of the branch point, if set. For example, if branch "main" tracks "origin/main", and we run `git checkout --track=inherit -b feature main`, then branch "feature" will track "origin/main". Thus, `git status` will show us how far ahead/behind we are from origin, and `git pull` will pull from origin. This is particularly useful when creating branches across many submodules, such as with `git submodule foreach ...` (or if running with a patch such as [1], which we use at $job), as it avoids having to manually set tracking info for each submodule. Since we've added an argument to "--track", also add "--track=direct" as another way to explicitly get the original "--track" behavior ("--track" without an argument still works as well). Finally, teach branch.autoSetupMerge a new "inherit" option. When this is set, "--track=inherit" becomes the default behavior. 2021-04-27hash: provide per-algorithm null OIDsbrian m. carlson1-1/+1
Up until recently, object IDs did not have an algorithm member, only a hash. Consequently, it was possible to share one null (all-zeros) object ID among all hash algorithms. Now that we're going to be handling objects from multiple hash algorithms, it's important to make sure that all object IDs have a correct algorithm field. Introduce a per-algorithm null OID, and add it to struct hash_algo. Introduce a wrapper function as well, and use it everywhere we used to use the null_oid constant. In the spirit of 517fe807d6 (assert NOARG/NONEG behavior of parse-options callbacks, 2018-11-05), let's cover some parse-options callbacks which expect to be used with PARSE_OPT_NONEG but don't explicitly assert that this is the case. These callbacks are all used correctly in the current code, but this will help document their expectations and future-proof the code. As a bonus, it also silences -Wunused-parameters (these were added since the initial sweep of 517fe807d6, and we can't yet turn on -Wunused-parameters to remind people because it has too many existing false positives). 2020-07-28strvec: convert remaining callers away from argv_array nameJeff King1-3/+3
We eventually want to drop the argv_array name and just use strvec consistently. There's no particular reason we have to do it all at once, or care about interactions between converted and unconverted bits. Because of our preprocessor compat layer, the names are interchangeable to the compiler (so even a definition and declaration using different names is OK). This patch converts all of the remaining files, as the resulting diff is reasonably sized. The conversion was done purely mechanically with: git ls-files '*.c' '*.h' | xargs perl -i -pe ' s/ARGV_ARRAY/STRVEC/g; s/argv_array/strvec/g; ' We'll deal with any indentation/style fallouts separately. 2020-03-30oid_array: rename source file from sha1-arrayJeff King1-1/+1
We renamed the actual data structure in 910650d2f8 (Rename sha1_array to oid_array, 2017-03-31), but the file is still called sha1-array. Besides being slightly confusing, it makes it more annoying to grep for leftover occurrences of "sha1" in various files, because the header is included in so many places. Let's complete the transition by renaming the source and header files (and fixing up a few comment references). I kept the "-" in the name, as that seems to be our style; cf. fc1395f4a4 (sha1_file.c: rename to use dash in file name, 2018-04-10). We also have oidmap.h and oidset.h without any punctuation, but those are "struct oidmap" and "struct oidset" in the code. We _could_ make this "oidarray" to match, but somehow it looks uglier to me because of the length of "array" (plus it would be a very invasive patch for little gain). parse_options_dup() counts the number of elements in the given array without the end marker, allocates enough memory to hold all of them plus an end marker, then copies them and terminates the new array. The counting part is done by advancing a pointer through the array, and the original pointer is reconstructed using pointer subtraction before the copy operation. The function is also prepared to handle a NULL pointer passed to it. None of its callers do that currently, but this feature was used by 46e91b663b ("checkout: split part of it to new command 'restore'", 2019-04-25); it seems worth keeping. It ends up doing arithmetic on that NULL pointer, though, which is undefined in standard C, when it tries to calculate "NULL - 0". Better avoid doing that by remembering the originally given pointer value. There is another issue, though. memcpy(3) does not support NULL pointers, even for empty arrays. Use COPY_ARRAY instead, which does support such empty arrays. Its call is also shorter and safer by inferring the element type automatically. Coccinelle and contrib/coccinelle/array.cocci did not propose to use COPY_ARRAY because of the pointer subtraction and because the source is const -- the semantic patch cautiously only considers pointers and array references of the same type. When parsing the argument for OPT_INTEGER and OPT_ABBREV, we check if we can parse the entire argument to a number with "if (*s)". There is one missing check: if "arg" is empty to begin with, we fail to notice. This could happen with long option by writing like git diff --inter-hunk-context= blah blah Before 16ed6c97cc (diff-parseopt: convert --inter-hunk-context, 2019-03-24), --inter-hunk-context is handled by a custom parser opt_arg() and does detect this correctly. This restores the bahvior for --inter-hunk-context and make sure all other integer options are handled the same (sane) way. For OPT_ABBREV this is new behavior. But it makes it consistent with the rest. PS. OPT_MAGNITUDE has similar code but git_parse_ulong() does detect empty "arg". So it's good to go. The user will have to be careful, not to change anything in ctx, or return wrong result code. But that's the price for ll_callback. Introduce optname() that does the early half of original opterror() to come up with the name of the option reported back to the user, and use it to kill opterror(). The callers of opterror() now directly call error() using the string returned by opterror() instead. There are a few issues with opterror() - it tries to assemble an English sentence from pieces. This is not great for translators because we give them pieces instead of a full sentence. - It's a wrapper around error() and needs some hack to let the compiler know it always returns -1. - Since it takes a string instead of printf format, one call site has to assemble the string manually before passing to it. Using error() directly solves the second and third problems. It kind helps the first problem as well because "%s does foo" does give a translator a full sentence in a sense and let them reorder if needed. But it has limitations, if the subject part has to change based on the rest of the sentence, that language is screwed. This is also why I try to avoid calling optname() when 'flags' is known in advance. Mark of these strings for translation as well while at there. When we define a parse-options callback, the flags we put in the option struct must match what the callback expects. For example, a callback which does not handle the "unset" parameter should only be used with PARSE_OPT_NONEG. But since the callback and the option struct are not defined next to each other, it's easy to get this wrong (as earlier patches in this series show). Fortunately, the compiler can help us here: compiling with -Wunused-parameters can show us which callbacks ignore their "unset" parameters (and likewise, ones that ignore "arg" expect to be triggered with PARSE_OPT_NOARG). But after we've inspected a callback and determined that all of its callers use the right flags, what do we do next? We'd like to silence the compiler warning, but do so in a way that will catch any wrong calls in the future. We can do that by actually checking those variables and asserting that they match our expectations. Because this is such a common pattern, we'll introduce some helper macros. The resulting messages aren't as descriptive as we could make them, but the file/line information from BUG() is enough to identify the problem (and anyway, the point is that these should never be seen). Each of the annotated callbacks in this patch triggers -Wunused-parameters, and was manually inspected to make sure all callers use the correct options (so none of these BUGs should be triggerable). There are no users of OPT_DATE except for test-parse-options; its only caller went away in 27ec394a97 (prune: introduce OPT_EXPIRY_DATE() and use it, 2013-04-25). It also has a bug: it does not specify PARSE_OPT_NONEG, but its callback does not respect the "unset" flag, and will feed NULL to approxidate() and segfault. Probably this should be marked with NONEG, or the callback should set the timestamp to some sentinel value (e.g,. "0", or "(time_t)-1"). But since there are no callers, deleting it means we don't even have to think about what the right behavior should be. A few commands that parse --expire=<time> command line option behave sillily when given nonsense input. For example $ git prune --no-expire Segmentation falut $ git prune --expire=npw; echo $? 129 Both come from parse_opt_expiry_date_cb(). The former is because the function is not prepared to see arg==NULL (for "--no-expire", it is a norm; "--expire" at the end of the command line could be made to pass NULL, if it is told that the argument is optional, but we don't so we do not have to worry about that case). The latter is because it does not check the value returned from the underlying parse_expiry_date(). This seems to be a recent regression introduced while we attempted to avoid spewing the entire usage message when given a correct option but with an invalid value at 3bb0923f ("parse-options: do not show usage upon invalid option value", 2018-03-22). Before that, we didn't fail silently but showed a full usage help (which arguably is not all that better). Also catch this error early when "git gc --prune=<expiration>" is misspelled by doing a dummy parsing before the main body of "gc" that is time consuming even begins. Otherwise, we'd spend time to pack objects and then later have "git prune" first notice the error. Aborting "gc" in the middle that way is not harmful but is ugly and can be avoided.
