2026-04-08crypto: Remove michael_mic from crypto_shash APIEric Biggers-3/+0
Remove the "michael_mic" crypto_shash algorithm, since it's no longer used. Its only users were wireless drivers, which have now been converted to use the michael_mic() function instead. It makes sense that no other users ever appeared: Michael MIC is an insecure algorithm that is specific to WPA TKIP, which itself was an interim security solution to replace the broken WEP standard. 2026-04-05arch, mm: consolidate empty_zero_pageMike Rapoport (Microsoft)-13/+4
Reduce 22 declarations of empty_zero_page to 3 and 23 declarations of ZERO_PAGE() to 4. Every architecture defines empty_zero_page that way or another, but for the most of them it is always a page aligned page in BSS and most definitions of ZERO_PAGE do virt_to_page(empty_zero_page). Move Linus vetted x86 definition of empty_zero_page and ZERO_PAGE() to the core MM and drop these definitions in architectures that do not implement colored zero page (MIPS and s390). ZERO_PAGE() remains a macro because turning it to a wrapper for a static inline causes severe pain in header dependencies. For the most part the change is mechanical, with these being noteworthy: * alpha: aliased empty_zero_page with ZERO_PGE that was also used for boot parameters. Switching to a generic empty_zero_page removes the aliasing and keeps ZERO_PGE for boot parameters only * arm64: uses __pa_symbol() in ZERO_PAGE() so that definition of ZERO_PAGE() is kept intact. * m68k/parisc/um: allocated empty_zero_page from memblock, although they do not support zero page coloring and having it in BSS will work fine. * sparc64 can have empty_zero_page in BSS rather allocate it, but it can't use virt_to_page() for BSS. Keep it's definition of ZERO_PAGE() but instead of allocating it, make mem_map_zero point to empty_zero_page. * sh: used empty_zero_page for boot parameters at the very early boot. Rename the parameters page to boot_params_page and let sh use the generic empty_zero_page. * hexagon: had an amusing comment about empty_zero_page /* A handy thing to have if one has the RAM. When a bridge window contains big and small resource(s), the small resource(s) may not amount to the half of the size of the big resource which would allow calculate_head_align() to shrink the head alignment. This results in always placing the small resource(s) after the big resource. In general, it would be good to be able to place the small resource(s) before the big resource to achieve better utilization of the address space. In the cases where the large resource can only fit at the end of the window, it is even required. However, carrying the information over from pbus_size_mem() and calculate_head_align() to __pci_assign_resource() and pcibios_align_resource() is not easy with the current data structures. A somewhat hacky way to move the non-aligning tail part to the head is possible within pcibios_align_resource(). The free space between the start of the free space span and the aligned start address can be compared with the non-aligning remainder of the size. If the free space is larger than the remainder, placing the remainder before the start address is possible. This relocation should generally work, because PCI resources consist only power-of-2 atoms. Various arch requirements may still need to override the relocation, so the relocation is only applied selectively in such cases. 2026-02-26kbuild: Split .modinfo out from ELF_DETAILSNathan Chancellor-0/+1
Commit 3e86e4d74c04 ("kbuild: keep .modinfo section in vmlinux.unstripped") added .modinfo to ELF_DETAILS while removing it from COMMON_DISCARDS, as it was needed in vmlinux.unstripped and ELF_DETAILS was present in all architecture specific vmlinux linker scripts. While this shuffle is fine for vmlinux, ELF_DETAILS and COMMON_DISCARDS may be used by other linker scripts, such as the s390 and x86 compressed boot images, which may not expect to have a .modinfo section. In certain circumstances, this could result in a bootloader failing to load the compressed kernel [1]. Commit ddc6cbef3ef1 ("s390/boot/vmlinux.lds.S: Ensure bzImage ends with SecureBoot trailer") recently addressed this for the s390 bzImage but the same bug remains for arm, parisc, and x86. The presence of .modinfo in the x86 bzImage was the root cause of the issue worked around with commit d50f21091358 ("kbuild: align modinfo section for Secureboot Authenticode EDK2 compat"). misc.c in arch/x86/boot/compressed includes lib/decompress_unzstd.c, which in turn includes lib/xxhash.c and its MODULE_LICENSE / MODULE_DESCRIPTION macros due to the STATIC definition. Split .modinfo out from ELF_DETAILS into its own macro and handle it in all vmlinux linker scripts. Discard .modinfo in the places where it was previously being discarded from being in COMMON_DISCARDS, as it has never been necessary in those uses. I only did the ones that are easy to verify the resulting diff by having just that final GFP_KERNEL argument on the next line. Somebody should probably do a proper coccinelle script for this, but for me the trivial script actually resulted in an assertion failure in the middle of the script. I probably had made it a bit _too_ trivial. So after fighting that far a while I decided to just do some of the syntactically simpler cases with variations of the previous 'sed' scripts. This was done entirely with mindless brute force, using git grep -l '\<k[vmz]*alloc_objs*(.*, GFP_KERNEL)' | xargs sed -i 's/\(alloc_objs*(.*\), GFP_KERNEL)/\1)/' to convert the new alloc_obj() users that had a simple GFP_KERNEL argument to just drop that argument. Note that due to the extreme simplicity of the scripting, any slightly more complex cases spread over multiple lines would not be triggered: they definitely exist, but this covers the vast bulk of the cases, and the resulting diff is also then easier to check automatically. Array allocations: kmalloc_array(COUNT, sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_objs(TYPE, COUNT, ...) Flex array allocations: kmalloc(struct_size(PTR, FAM, COUNT), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_flex(*PTR, FAM, COUNT, ...) To initialize node, zone and memory map data structures every architecture calls free_area_init() during setup_arch() and passes it an array of zone limits. Beside code duplication it creates "interesting" ordering cases between allocation and initialization of hugetlb and the memory map. Some architectures allocate hugetlb pages very early in setup_arch() in certain cases, some only create hugetlb CMA areas in setup_arch() and sometimes hugetlb allocations happen mm_core_init(). With arch_zone_limits_init() helper available now on all architectures it is no longer necessary to call free_area_init() from architecture setup code. Rather core MM initialization can call arch_zone_limits_init() in a single place. This allows to unify ordering of hugetlb vs memory map allocation and initialization. Remove the call to free_area_init() from architecture specific code and place it in a new mm_core_init_early() function that is called immediately after setup_arch(). After this refactoring it is possible to consolidate hugetlb allocations and eliminate differences in ordering of hugetlb and memory map initialization among different architectures. Remove ansi_cprng, since it's obsolete and unused, as confirmed at https://lore.kernel.org/r/aQxpnckYMgAAOLpZ@gondor.apana.org.au/ This was originally added in 2008, apparently as a FIPS approved random number generator. Whether this has ever belonged upstream is questionable. Either way, ansi_cprng is no longer usable for this purpose, since it's been superseded by the more modern algorithms in crypto/drbg.c, and FIPS itself no longer allows it. (NIST SP 800-131A Rev 1 (2015) says that RNGs based on ANSI X9.31 will be disallowed after 2015. NIST SP 800-131A Rev 2 (2019) confirms they are now disallowed.) Therefore, there is no reason to keep it around. To achieve this, move the modifiable fields out of the syscore_ops structure and into a separate struct syscore that can be registered with the framework. 2025-09-25arch: Add the macro COMPILE_OFFSETS to all the asm-offsets.cMenglong Dong-0/+1
The include/generated/asm-offsets.h is generated in Kbuild during compiling from arch/SRCARCH/kernel/asm-offsets.c. When we want to generate another similar offset header file, circular dependency can happen. For example, we want to generate a offset file include/generated/test.h, which is included in include/sched/sched.h. If we generate asm-offsets.h first, it will fail, as include/sched/sched.h is included in asm-offsets.c and include/generated/test.h doesn't exist; If we generate test.h first, it can't success neither, as include/generated/asm-offsets.h is included by it. In x86_64, the macro COMPILE_OFFSETS is used to avoid such circular dependency. We can generate asm-offsets.h first, and if the COMPILE_OFFSETS is defined, we don't include the "generated/test.h". 2025-09-13mm: introduce memdesc_flags_tMatthew Wilcox (Oracle)-11/+11
Patch series "Add and use memdesc_flags_t". At some point struct page will be separated from struct slab and struct folio. This is a step towards that by introducing a type for the 'flags' word of all three structures. This gives us a certain amount of type safety by establishing that some of these unsigned longs are different from other unsigned longs in that they contain things like node ID, section number and zone number in the upper bits. That lets us have functions that can be easily called by anyone who has a slab, folio or page (but not easily by anyone else) to get the node or zone. There's going to be some unusual merge problems with this as some odd bits of the kernel decide they want to print out the flags value or something similar by writing page->flags and now they'll need to write page->flags.f instead. That's most of the churn here. Maybe we should be removing these things from the debug output? This patch (of 11): Wrap the unsigned long flags in a typedef. In upcoming patches, this will provide a strong hint that you can't just pass a random unsigned long to functions which take this as an argument. 2025-09-08sh: Add __attribute_const__ to ffs()-family implementationsKees Cook-2/+2
While tracking down a problem where constant expressions used by BUILD_BUG_ON() suddenly stopped working[1], we found that an added static initializer was convincing the compiler that it couldn't track the state of the prior statically initialized value. Tracing this down found that ffs() was used in the initializer macro, but since it wasn't marked with __attribute__const__, the compiler had to assume the function might change variable states as a side-effect (which is not true for ffs(), which provides deterministic math results). Add missing __attribute_const__ annotations to SH's implementations of __ffs() and ffz() functions. These are pure mathematical functions that always return the same result for the same input with no side effects, making them eligible for compiler optimization. Build tested ARCH=sh defconfig with GCC sh4-linux-gnu 14.2.0. 2025-09-01arch: copy_thread: pass clone_flags as u64Simon Schuster-1/+1
With the introduction of clone3 in commit 7f192e3cd316 ("fork: add clone3") the effective bit width of clone_flags on all architectures was increased from 32-bit to 64-bit, with a new type of u64 for the flags. However, for most consumers of clone_flags the interface was not changed from the previous type of unsigned long. While this works fine as long as none of the new 64-bit flag bits (CLONE_CLEAR_SIGHAND and CLONE_INTO_CGROUP) are evaluated, this is still undesirable in terms of the principle of least surprise. Thus, this commit fixes all relevant interfaces of the copy_thread function that is called from copy_process to consistently pass clone_flags as u64, so that no truncation to 32-bit integers occurs on 32-bit architectures. Both system calls serve as successors and extensible companions to the FS_IOC_FSGETXATTR and FS_IOC_FSSETXATTR system calls which have started to show their age in addition to being named in a way that makes it easy to conflate them with extended attribute related operations. These syscalls allow userspace to set filesystem inode attributes on special files. One of the usage examples is the XFS quota projects. XFS has project quotas which could be attached to a directory. All new inodes in these directories inherit project ID set on parent directory. The project is created from userspace by opening and calling FS_IOC_FSSETXATTR on each inode. This is not possible for special files such as FIFO, SOCK, BLK etc. Therefore, some inodes are left with empty project ID. Those inodes then are not shown in the quota accounting but still exist in the directory. This is not critical but in the case when special files are created in the directory with already existing project quota, these new inodes inherit extended attributes. This creates a mix of special files with and without attributes. Moreover, special files with attributes don't have a possibility to become clear or change the attributes. This, in turn, prevents userspace from re-creating quota project on these existing files. arch/sh/Makefile defines and exports ld-bfd to be used by arch/sh/boot/compressed/Makefile and arch/sh/boot/romimage/Makefile. However some shells, including dash, will not pass through environment variables whose name includes a hyphen. Usually GNU make does not use a shell to recurse, but if e.g. $(srctree) contains '~' it will use a shell here. Other instances of this problem were previously fixed by commits 2bfbe7881ee0 "kbuild: Do not use hyphen in exported variable name" and 82977af93a0d "sh: rename suffix-y to suffix_y". Rename the variable to ld_bfd. Ftrace is tightly coupled with architecture specific code because it requires the use of trampolines written in assembly. This means that when a new feature or optimization is made, it must be done for all architectures. To simplify the approach, CONFIG_HAVE_FTRACE_* configs are added to denote which architecture has the new enhancement so that other architectures can still function until they too have been updated. The CONFIG_HAVE_FTRACE_MCOUNT was added to help simplify the DYNAMIC_FTRACE work, but now every architecture that implements DYNAMIC_FTRACE also has HAVE_FTRACE_MCOUNT set too, making it redundant with the HAVE_DYNAMIC_FTRACE. Remove the HAVE_FTRACE_MCOUNT config and use DYNAMIC_FTRACE directly where applicable. Patch series "kdump: crashkernel reservation from CMA", v5. This series implements a way to reserve additional crash kernel memory using CMA. Currently, all the memory for the crash kernel is not usable by the 1st (production) kernel. It is also unmapped so that it can't be corrupted by the fault that will eventually trigger the crash. This makes sense for the memory actually used by the kexec-loaded crash kernel image and initrd and the data prepared during the load (vmcoreinfo, ...). However, the reserved space needs to be much larger than that to provide enough run-time memory for the crash kernel and the kdump userspace. Estimating the amount of memory to reserve is difficult. Being too careful makes kdump likely to end in OOM, being too generous takes even more memory from the production system. Also, the reservation only allows reserving a single contiguous block (or two with the "low" suffix). I've seen systems where this fails because the physical memory is fragmented. By reserving additional crashkernel memory from CMA, the main crashkernel reservation can be just large enough to fit the kernel and initrd image, minimizing the memory taken away from the production system. Most of the run-time memory for the crash kernel will be memory previously available to userspace in the production system. As this memory is no longer wasted, the reservation can be done with a generous margin, making kdump more reliable. Kernel memory that we need to preserve for dumping is normally not allocated from CMA, unless it is explicitly allocated as movable. Currently this is only the case for memory ballooning and zswap. Such movable memory will be missing from the vmcore. User data is typically not dumped by makedumpfile. When dumping of user data is intended this new CMA reservation cannot be used. There are five patches in this series: The first adds a new ",cma" suffix to the recenly introduced generic crashkernel parsing code. parse_crashkernel() takes one more argument to store the cma reservation size. The second patch implements reserve_crashkernel_cma() which performs the reservation. If the requested size is not available in a single range, multiple smaller ranges will be reserved. The third patch updates Documentation/, explicitly mentioning the potential DMA corruption of the CMA-reserved memory. The fourth patch adds a short delay before booting the kdump kernel, allowing pending DMA transfers to finish. The fifth patch enables the functionality for x86 as a proof of concept. There are just three things every arch needs to do: - call reserve_crashkernel_cma() - include the CMA-reserved ranges in the physical memory map - exclude the CMA-reserved ranges from the memory available through /proc/vmcore by excluding them from the vmcoreinfo PT_LOAD ranges. Adding other architectures is easy and I can do that as soon as this series is merged. With this series applied, specifying crashkernel=100M craskhernel=1G,cma on the command line will make a standard crashkernel reservation of 100M, where kexec will load the kernel and initrd. An additional 1G will be reserved from CMA, still usable by the production system. The crash kernel will have 1.1G memory available. The 100M can be reliably predicted based on the size of the kernel and initrd. The new cma suffix is completely optional. When no crashkernel=size,cma is specified, everything works as before. This patch (of 5): Add a new cma_size parameter to parse_crashkernel(). When not NULL, call __parse_crashkernel to parse the CMA reservation size from "crashkernel=size,cma" and store it in cma_size. Set cma_size to NULL in all calls to parse_crashkernel().
