2026-02-21Convert more 'alloc_obj' cases to default GFP_KERNEL argumentsLinus Torvalds-10/+5
This converts some of the visually simpler cases that have been split over multiple lines. I only did the ones that are easy to verify the resulting diff by having just that final GFP_KERNEL argument on the next line. Somebody should probably do a proper coccinelle script for this, but for me the trivial script actually resulted in an assertion failure in the middle of the script. I probably had made it a bit _too_ trivial. So after fighting that far a while I decided to just do some of the syntactically simpler cases with variations of the previous 'sed' scripts. The more syntactically complex multi-line cases would mostly really want whitespace cleanup anyway. Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>
2026-02-21Convert 'alloc_obj' family to use the new default GFP_KERNEL argumentLinus Torvalds-134/+134
This was done entirely with mindless brute force, using git grep -l '\<k[vmz]*alloc_objs*(.*, GFP_KERNEL)' | xargs sed -i 's/\(alloc_objs*(.*\), GFP_KERNEL)/\1)/' to convert the new alloc_obj() users that had a simple GFP_KERNEL argument to just drop that argument. Note that due to the extreme simplicity of the scripting, any slightly more complex cases spread over multiple lines would not be triggered: they definitely exist, but this covers the vast bulk of the cases, and the resulting diff is also then easier to check automatically. For the same reason the 'flex' versions will be done as a separate conversion. Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>
2026-02-21treewide: Replace kmalloc with kmalloc_obj for non-scalar typesKees Cook-141/+144
This is the result of running the Coccinelle script from scripts/coccinelle/api/kmalloc_objs.cocci. The script is designed to avoid scalar types (which need careful case-by-case checking), and instead replace kmalloc-family calls that allocate struct or union object instances: Single allocations: kmalloc(sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_obj(TYPE, ...) Array allocations: kmalloc_array(COUNT, sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_objs(TYPE, COUNT, ...) Flex array allocations: kmalloc(struct_size(PTR, FAM, COUNT), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_flex(*PTR, FAM, COUNT, ...) (where TYPE may also be *VAR) The resulting allocations no longer return "void *", instead returning "TYPE *". Signed-off-by: Kees Cook <kees@kernel.org>

2025-08-07treewide: rename GPIO set callbacks back to their original namesBartosz Golaszewski-1/+1
The conversion of all GPIO drivers to using the .set_rv() and .set_multiple_rv() callbacks from struct gpio_chip (which - unlike their predecessors - return an integer and allow the controller drivers to indicate failures to users) is now complete and the legacy ones have been removed. Rename the new callbacks back to their original names in one sweeping change. Signed-off-by: Bartosz Golaszewski <bartosz.golaszewski@linaro.org>

In dib7090p_rw_on_apb, msg is controlled by user. When msg[0].buf is null and msg[0].len is zero, former checks on msg[0].buf would be passed. If accessing msg[0].buf[2] without sanity check, null pointer deref would happen. We add check on msg[0].len to prevent crash. Similar issue occurs when access msg[1].buf[0] and msg[1].buf[1]. 2025-03-12media: rtl2832_sdr: assign vb2 lock before vb2_queue_initHans Verkuil-1/+1
Commit c780d01cf1a6 ("media: vb2: vb2_core_queue_init(): sanity check lock and wait_prepare/finish") added a sanity check to ensure that if there are no wait_prepare/finish callbacks set by the driver, then the vb2_queue lock must be set, since otherwise the vb2 core cannot do correct locking. The rtl2832_sdr.c triggered this warning: it turns out that while the driver does set this lock, it sets it too late. So move it up to before the vb2_queue_init() call. 2024-10-12media: Switch back to struct platform_driver::remove()Uwe Kleine-König-2/+2
After commit 0edb555a65d1 ("platform: Make platform_driver::remove() return void") .remove() is (again) the right callback to implement for platform drivers. Convert all platform drivers below drivers/media to use .remove(), with the eventual goal to drop struct platform_driver::remove_new(). As .remove() and .remove_new() have the same prototypes, conversion is done by just changing the structure member name in the driver initializer. 2024-07-28minmax: make generic MIN() and MAX() macros available everywhereLinus Torvalds-0/+3
This just standardizes the use of MIN() and MAX() macros, with the very traditional semantics. The goal is to use these for C constant expressions and for top-level / static initializers, and so be able to simplify the min()/max() macros. These macro names were used by various kernel code - they are very traditional, after all - and all such users have been fixed up, with a few different approaches: - trivial duplicated macro definitions have been removed Note that 'trivial' here means that it's obviously kernel code that already included all the major kernel headers, and thus gets the new generic MIN/MAX macros automatically. - non-trivial duplicated macro definitions are guarded with #ifndef This is the "yes, they define their own versions, but no, the include situation is not entirely obvious, and maybe they don't get the generic version automatically" case. - strange use case #1 A couple of drivers decided that the way they want to describe their versioning is with #define MAJ 1 #define MIN 2 #define DRV_VERSION __stringify(MAJ) "." __stringify(MIN) which adds zero value and I just did my Alexander the Great impersonation, and rewrote that pointless Gordian knot as #define DRV_VERSION "1.2" instead. - strange use case #2 A couple of drivers thought that it's a good idea to have a random 'MIN' or 'MAX' define for a value or index into a table, rather than the traditional macro that takes arguments. These values were re-written as C enum's instead. The new function-line macros only expand when followed by an open parenthesis, and thus don't clash with enum use. Happily, there weren't really all that many of these cases, and a lot of users already had the pattern of using '#ifndef' guarding (or in one case just using '#undef MIN') before defining their own private version that does the same thing. I left such cases alone. Cc: David Laight <David.Laight@aculab.com> Cc: Lorenzo Stoakes <lorenzo.stoakes@oracle.com> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>

2024-05-03media: mxl5xx: Move xpt structures off stackNathan Chancellor-11/+11
When building for LoongArch with clang 18.0.0, the stack usage of probe() is larger than the allowed 2048 bytes: drivers/media/dvb-frontends/mxl5xx.c:1698:12: warning: stack frame size (2368) exceeds limit (2048) in 'probe' [-Wframe-larger-than] 1698 | static int probe(struct mxl *state, struct mxl5xx_cfg *cfg) | ^ 1 warning generated. This is the result of the linked LLVM commit, which changes how the arrays of structures in config_ts() get handled with CONFIG_INIT_STACK_ZERO and CONFIG_INIT_STACK_PATTERN, which causes the above warning in combination with inlining, as config_ts() gets inlined into probe(). This warning can be easily fixed by moving the array of structures off of the stackvia 'static const', which is a better location for these variables anyways because they are static data that is only ever read from, never modified, so allocating the stack space is wasteful. This drops the stack usage from 2368 bytes to 256 bytes with the same compiler and configuration.
