This has caused a number of filesystems to implement hacks to hash a 64-bit identifier into a 32-bit field, and deprives us of a universal identifier field for an inode. This changes the inode->i_ino field from an unsigned long to a u64. This shouldn't make any material difference on 64-bit hosts, but 32-bit hosts will see struct inode grow by at least 4 bytes. This could have effects on slabcache sizes and field alignment. The bulk of the changes are to format strings and tracepoints, since the kernel itself doesn't care that much about the i_ino field. The first patch changes some vfs function arguments, so check that one out carefully. With this change, we may be able to shrink some inode structures. For instance, struct nfs_inode has a fileid field that holds the 64-bit inode number. With this set of changes, that field could be eliminated. 2026-04-12net: rose: reject truncated CLEAR_REQUEST frames in state machinesMashiro Chen-0/+7
All five ROSE state machines (states 1-5) handle ROSE_CLEAR_REQUEST by reading the cause and diagnostic bytes directly from skb->data[3] and skb->data[4] without verifying that the frame is long enough: rose_disconnect(sk, ..., skb->data[3], skb->data[4]); The entry-point check in rose_route_frame() only enforces ROSE_MIN_LEN (3 bytes), so a remote peer on a ROSE network can send a syntactically valid but truncated CLEAR_REQUEST (3 or 4 bytes) while a connection is open in any state. Processing such a frame causes a one- or two-byte out-of-bounds read past the skb data, leaking uninitialized heap content as the cause/diagnostic values returned to user space via getsockopt(ROSE_GETCAUSE). Add a single length check at the rose_process_rx_frame() dispatch point, before any state machine is entered, to drop frames that carry the CLEAR_REQUEST type code but are too short to contain the required cause and diagnostic fields. 2026-03-12net/rose: fix NULL pointer dereference in rose_transmit_link on reconnectJiayuan Chen-0/+5
syzkaller reported a bug [1], and the reproducer is available at [2]. ROSE sockets use four sk->sk_state values: TCP_CLOSE, TCP_LISTEN, TCP_SYN_SENT, and TCP_ESTABLISHED. rose_connect() already rejects calls for TCP_ESTABLISHED (-EISCONN) and TCP_CLOSE with SS_CONNECTING (-ECONNREFUSED), but lacks a check for TCP_SYN_SENT. When rose_connect() is called a second time while the first connection attempt is still in progress (TCP_SYN_SENT), it overwrites rose->neighbour via rose_get_neigh(). If that returns NULL, the socket is left with rose->state == ROSE_STATE_1 but rose->neighbour == NULL. When the socket is subsequently closed, rose_release() sees ROSE_STATE_1 and calls rose_write_internal() -> rose_transmit_link(skb, NULL), causing a NULL pointer dereference. Per connect(2), a second connect() while a connection is already in progress should return -EALREADY. Add this missing check for TCP_SYN_SENT to complete the state validation in rose_connect(). 2026-03-06treewide: change inode->i_ino from unsigned long to u64Jeff Layton-2/+2
On 32-bit architectures, unsigned long is only 32 bits wide, which causes 64-bit inode numbers to be silently truncated. Several filesystems (NFS, XFS, BTRFS, etc.) can generate inode numbers that exceed 32 bits, and this truncation can lead to inode number collisions and other subtle bugs on 32-bit systems. Change the type of inode->i_ino from unsigned long to u64 to ensure that inode numbers are always represented as 64-bit values regardless of architecture. Update all format specifiers treewide from %lu/%lx to %llu/%llx to match the new type, along with corresponding local variable types. This is the bulk treewide conversion. Earlier patches in this series handled trace events separately to allow trace field reordering for better struct packing on 32-bit. 2026-02-21Convert 'alloc_obj' family to use the new default GFP_KERNEL argumentLinus Torvalds-2/+2
This was done entirely with mindless brute force, using git grep -l '\<k[vmz]*alloc_objs*(.*, GFP_KERNEL)' | xargs sed -i 's/\(alloc_objs*(.*\), GFP_KERNEL)/\1)/' to convert the new alloc_obj() users that had a simple GFP_KERNEL argument to just drop that argument. Note that due to the extreme simplicity of the scripting, any slightly more complex cases spread over multiple lines would not be triggered: they definitely exist, but this covers the vast bulk of the cases, and the resulting diff is also then easier to check automatically. This is the result of running the Coccinelle script from scripts/coccinelle/api/kmalloc_objs.cocci. The script is designed to avoid scalar types (which need careful case-by-case checking), and instead replace kmalloc-family calls that allocate struct or union object instances: Single allocations: kmalloc(sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_obj(TYPE, ...) Array allocations: kmalloc_array(COUNT, sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_objs(TYPE, COUNT, ...) Flex array allocations: kmalloc(struct_size(PTR, FAM, COUNT), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_flex(*PTR, FAM, COUNT, ...) 2025-12-30net: rose: fix invalid array index in rose_kill_by_device()Pwnverse-1/+1
rose_kill_by_device() collects sockets into a local array[] and then iterates over them to disconnect sockets bound to a device being brought down. The loop mistakenly indexes array[cnt] instead of array[i]. For cnt < ARRAY_SIZE(array), this reads an uninitialized entry; for cnt == ARRAY_SIZE(array), it is an out-of-bounds read. Either case can lead to an invalid socket pointer dereference and also leaks references taken via sock_hold(). Fix the index to use i. 2025-08-27net: rose: include node references in rose_neigh refcountTakamitsu Iwai-2/+16
Current implementation maintains two separate reference counting mechanisms: the 'count' field in struct rose_neigh tracks references from rose_node structures, while the 'use' field (now refcount_t) tracks references from rose_sock. This patch merges these two reference counting systems using 'use' field for proper reference management. Specifically, this patch adds incrementing and decrementing of rose_neigh->use when rose_neigh->count is incremented or decremented. This patch also modifies rose_rt_free(), rose_rt_device_down() and rose_clear_route() to properly release references to rose_neigh objects before freeing a rose_node through rose_remove_node(). These changes ensure rose_neigh structures are properly freed only when all references, including those from rose_node structures, are released. As a result, this resolves a slab-use-after-free issue reported by Syzbot. The 'use' field in struct rose_neigh is used as a reference counter but lacks atomicity. This can lead to race conditions where a rose_neigh structure is freed while still being referenced by other code paths. For example, when rose_neigh->use becomes zero during an ioctl operation via rose_rt_ioctl(), the structure may be removed while its timer is still active, potentially causing use-after-free issues. This patch changes the type of 'use' from unsigned short to refcount_t and updates all code paths to use rose_neigh_hold() and rose_neigh_put() which operate reference counts atomically. 2025-08-27net: rose: split remove and free operations in rose_remove_neigh()Takamitsu Iwai-9/+6
The current rose_remove_neigh() performs two distinct operations: 1. Removes rose_neigh from rose_neigh_list 2. Frees the rose_neigh structure Split these operations into separate functions to improve maintainability and prepare for upcoming refcount_t conversion. The timer cleanup remains in rose_remove_neigh() because free operations can be called from timer itself. This patch introduce rose_neigh_put() to handle the freeing of rose_neigh structures and modify rose_remove_neigh() to handle removal only. 2025-07-18net: track pfmemalloc drops via SKB_DROP_REASON_PFMEMALLOCJesper Dangaard Brouer-1/+2
Add a new SKB drop reason (SKB_DROP_REASON_PFMEMALLOC) to track packets dropped due to memory pressure. In production environments, we've observed memory exhaustion reported by memory layer stack traces, but these drops were not properly tracked in the SKB drop reason infrastructure. While most network code paths now properly report pfmemalloc drops, some protocol-specific socket implementations still use sk_filter() without drop reason tracking: - Bluetooth L2CAP sockets - CAIF sockets - IUCV sockets - Netlink sockets - SCTP sockets - Unix domain sockets These remaining cases represent less common paths and could be converted in a follow-up patch if needed. The current implementation provides significantly improved observability into memory pressure events in the network stack, especially for key protocols like TCP and UDP, helping to diagnose problems in production environments. 2025-07-01rose: fix dangling neighbour pointers in rose_rt_device_down()Kohei Enju-11/+4
There are two bugs in rose_rt_device_down() that can cause use-after-free: 1. The loop bound `t->count` is modified within the loop, which can cause the loop to terminate early and miss some entries. 2. When removing an entry from the neighbour array, the subsequent entries are moved up to fill the gap, but the loop index `i` is still incremented, causing the next entry to be skipped. For example, if a node has three neighbours (A, A, B) with count=3 and A is being removed, the second A is not checked. i=0: (A, A, B) -> (A, B) with count=2 ^ checked i=1: (A, B) -> (A, B) with count=2 ^ checked (B, not A!) i=2: (doesn't occur because i < count is false) This leaves the second A in the array with count=2, but the rose_neigh structure has been freed. Code that accesses these entries assumes that the first `count` entries are valid pointers, causing a use-after-free when it accesses the dangling pointer. Fix both issues by iterating over the array in reverse order with a fixed loop bound. This ensures that all entries are examined and that the removal of an entry doesn't affect subsequent iterations. 2023-01-28net/rose: Fix to not accept on connected socketHyunwoo Kim-0/+8
If you call listen() and accept() on an already connect()ed rose socket, accept() can successfully connect. This is because when the peer socket sends data to sendmsg, the skb with its own sk stored in the connected socket's sk->sk_receive_queue is connected, and rose_accept() dequeues the skb waiting in the sk->sk_receive_queue. This creates a child socket with the sk of the parent rose socket, which can cause confusion. Fix rose_listen() to return -EINVAL if the socket has already been successfully connected, and add lock_sock to prevent this issue. Bernard reported that trying to unload rose module would lead to infamous messages: unregistered_netdevice: waiting for rose0 to become free. Usage count = xx This patch solves the issue, by making sure each socket referring to a netdevice holds a reference count on it, and properly releases it in rose_release(). rose_dev_first() is also fixed to take a device reference before leaving the rcu_read_locked section. Following patch will add ref_tracker annotations to ease future bug hunting. skb_recv_datagram() has two parameters 'flags' and 'noblock' that are merged inside skb_recv_datagram() by 'flags | (noblock ? MSG_DONTWAIT : 0)' As 'flags' may contain MSG_DONTWAIT as value most callers split the 'flags' into 'flags' and 'noblock' with finally obsolete bit operations like this: skb_recv_datagram(sk, flags & ~MSG_DONTWAIT, flags & MSG_DONTWAIT, &rc); And this is not even done consistently with the 'flags' parameter. This patch removes the obsolete and costly splitting into two parameters and only performs bit operations when really needed on the caller side. One missing conversion thankfully reported by kernel test robot. I missed to enable kunit tests to build the mctp code. sock.h is pretty heavily used (5k objects rebuilt on x86 after it's touched). We can drop the include of filter.h from it and add a forward declaration of struct sk_filter instead. This decreases the number of rebuilt objects when bpf.h is touched from ~5k to ~1k. There's a lot of missing includes this was masking. Primarily in networking tho, this time. rose_send_frame() dereferences `neigh->dev` when called from rose_transmit_clear_request(), and the first occurrence of the `neigh` is in rose_loopback_timer() as `rose_loopback_neigh`, and it is initialized in rose_add_loopback_neigh() as NULL. i.e when `rose_loopback_neigh` used in rose_loopback_timer() its `->dev` was still NULL and rose_loopback_timer() was calling rose_rx_call_request() without checking for NULL. - net/rose/rose_link.c This bug seems to get triggered in this line: rose_call = (ax25_address *)neigh->dev->dev_addr; Fix it by adding NULL checking for `rose_loopback_neigh->dev` in rose_loopback_timer(). 2020-06-09net: change addr_list_lock back to static keyCong Wang-0/+2
The dynamic key update for addr_list_lock still causes troubles, for example the following race condition still exists: CPU 0: CPU 1: (RCU read lock) (RTNL lock) dev_mc_seq_show() netdev_update_lockdep_key() -> lockdep_unregister_key() -> netif_addr_lock_bh() because lockdep doesn't provide an API to update it atomically. Therefore, we have to move it back to static keys and use subclass for nest locking like before. In commit 1a33e10e4a95 ("net: partially revert dynamic lockdep key changes"), I already reverted most parts of commit ab92d68fc22f ("net: core: add generic lockdep keys"). This patch reverts the rest and also part of commit f3b0a18bb6cb ("net: remove unnecessary variables and callback"). After this patch, addr_list_lock changes back to using static keys and subclasses to satisfy lockdep. Thanks to dev->lower_level, we do not have to change back to ->ndo_get_lock_subclass(). And hopefully this reduces some syzbot lockdep noises too.
